Q & A - The Icy Shores sit down with themselves

You may have some questions about the Icy Shores. Anticipating this, we have prepared this informative self-questionnaire.

Q: Where are the Icy Shores from?

A: The Icy Shores are based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Q: Who is in the Icy Shores?

A: Nick sings and plays guitar, as does Hunter Jonakin. Shane Stubblefield plays bass, and Nick Larsen plays the drums.

Q: Sounds boring. Haven't I heard this skinny-boy indie rock before?

A: Yes, but the bands you heard did not feature these particular members.

Q: Are all of the members from Minnesota?

A: No. Nick was born in the U.K. His family moved to the U.S. when he was a small child, and he has endured the hurtful barbs that only a foreigner can experience ever since. Shane and Hunter are originally from Alabama. They moved to Minneapolis ten years ago to pursue a career in music. Yes, a career in music. Anyway, they too have endured the hurtful barbs that only a foreigner can experience, though they are southerners, and not foreigners. Well, maybe they are foreigners in a sense. Nick Larsen is from Minneapolis. He has not endured any hurtful barbs at all. He is a completely well-adjusted young man, and a damn fine drummer.

Q: Alabama, huh? I bet Minnesota is quite different.

A: Yes, it is. There are lots of strange critters 'round these parts. And here, people wear pants.

Q: Who writes all the songs?

A: The band shares in the songwriting and vocals.

Q: Harrumph. Anyway, what is the title of the new album?

A: It's called What You Get and How You Get It.

Q: What does it sound like?

A: Some people say it's a mixture of influences ranging from the Afghan Whigs to Radiohead to the Foo Fighters. It's dark and poppy and everything in between.

Q: Does the band play live much?

A: If twice a year is a lot, then yes. However, the band plans on playing out quite a bit when the record is released.

Q: When will the record be released?

A: November, 2005.

Q: Have the members of the Icy Shores been in any bands I have heard of?

A: Well, Shane and Hunter were in Godplow, Broadcaster, and Redlevel. Shane and Nick were in Hollypond; and Nick Larsen was in Red Light Go, the Porcelain Boys/Jettison, and Helva.

Q: So, I guess that's a “no.” Who does the band cite as influences?

A: Well, that depends on who your favorite bands are. If they had to choose, they would say some mixture of American Music Club, Nada Surf, Archers of Loaf, the Lemonheads, Chavez, Jawbox, Queens of the Stone Age, Sunny Day Real Estate, At The Drive-In, Dinosaur Jr., Refused, Don Caballero and Quicksand.

Q: Eclectic. Me likey.

A: What?

Q: Nothing. So what do the Icy Shores have in store for us music lovers?

A: With the release of their first album, the Icy Shores hope to play out more than twice a year and expose more people to their music. A combination of interesting song composition and catchy hooks featured on an album mixed by Bryan Hanna at the Terrarium studio shouldn't hurt their efforts either.

Q: So, what should I expect when I put this record in my compact disc player?

A: Well, first off, you'd better have a barf bag, a diaper, a compass and a shovel.

Q: Why?

A: Because this album is totally fucking awesome.

Q: Works for me. Bye!
